Coasters

There’s real hair on the leg of the pirate
on the bridge, that’s the detail
   that gets me every time.

“I had to close my eyes, I was scared
I’d lose my contacts,” says the man

from Memphis, ahead of me.
We both know to scoot to the far side
of the pre-show room, first in line

for the second time. Always ask to wait
for the front car. At the top

of the Pepsi Max One (longest-tallest-
fastest) you can see Blackpool laid out
beneath, the map edged with sea

spreading across the shingle, spreading
across the world. The repeat riders

do sitcom or catalog poses for the flash,
checking an imaginary watch or pointing to the middle
distance, later laughing at the souvenir

photos below, never buying, memory
is enough to compare to the next coaster,
the next time. Montu’s floor drops out,

and my bare feet dangle, loose sandals
in the cubby, and the world drops
away, Florida drops away, the humidity

wrapping my throat like his hands
as I rise, screaming, into sunshine.

The dialogue at the end cracks me up! I'm a roller-coaster rider, Java is a purse holder ;)

Thanks! My theory is we often come in pairs, which is useful! We have to Six Flags sometime :)

A thought: The water park nearby has new tube rides and the floor falls out as you plunge down 40 miles an hour. I am psyching myself up to try it but not sure if i will do it. I never can pinch tight enough and I HATE water up my nose!

Nicely detailed contrast in your poem. :)

Though I often am nervous while in line, I'm definitely one of the riders.

I haven't been on one in ages, but we used to Six Flags (Riverside for you old New Englanders) every year!

I have a friend who refused to scream on coasters - she claims that she, um, "got off" better that way, if you know what I mean. *wink*

I have a hard time with ones that are old and rattly, but I like the newer ones with a smooth ride.
