« previous entry | next entry »

I know a lot of my friends here write flash fiction (or might like to try it!) and here's a contest to enter!

Lascaux Flash 2012

There's a photo prompt and full details at the link above. Submissions open September 8th and close September 22nd. Limit is 250 words not including the title, and format and how-to-submit are also at the link.

Happy Writing!

Thanks for sharing this!

250 words is not a lot of words! I'm not sure I can make a point, let alone tell a story that fast! ;)

And (this is me being confused, not criticising) Is it still "flash" fiction if the prompt is up four days ahead of time and there's two weeks time to submit entries?

I don't know, that's a good question! I think of "flash" as just "short" - like, it can be read in a flash, rather than written in a flash?

Wikipedia says it refers to length of story. Also, cool little side note, in China, a flash piece is supposed to be readable in the time it takes to smoke a cigarette!

Hah! All this time I thought it was written in a flash! D'oh!

As short as it is, you could print them on a pack of cigarettes. :)

Thanks for the link-- looks interesting!

And a nice challenge for someone like me, who likes to write drabbles.

I also mistook the meaning for "write in a flash," not "read in a flash." ;)

I used to visit a site that specialized in Flash Animation, so I'll admit that I misinterpreted the meaning of the word "Flash" in the initial announcement.

I have heard of "challenges" like this before this before -- indeed, one of my favorite authors (Neil Gaiman) once participated in a challenge where he was limited to 100 words. He wrote a fun little piece, but he technically cheated: the two-word "title" of his piece is actually part of the story itself, making the total length 102 words.

I don't think I have the chops to produce a meaningful work of 250 words or less... but I may give it a shot anyway...

I did a drabble (100 words) for the first time earlier this week. I'm working on my entry for the flash fiction contest now, and I swear 250 words is harder than 100. There's more room to hang yourself but not enough to easily fix it, ha. Although it may be that my stupid uncooperative character who decided he needed to be involved (always!) is what's making it harder. Why, characters? Why do you do this?

Anyway, if you haven't read the 100-word fic I posted, you should. I am wordy as shit and I didn't think I cold do it either. I think it came out well. So I bet you could, too. :)

I'm having a hard time with making them have external action instead of just inside-the-head stuff.

I'm debating! I don't think I'm good at it, but I'm going to try to write some over the next couple days and see...

I tried rewriting an existing piece of mine as flash fiction (because it was what the photo prompt inspired for me). I'm happy with the rewrite in the sense that I hated the original piece, but I'm not convinced it's ever going to be an awesome standalone thing.

kathrynrose said you gave her a challenge. You happen to have any ideas for what I should write in 250 words? Haha.

Do you want a deadline, too?

Hmmm... I'm scared to have more deadlines! Why did I sign up for so many things?! Haha.

My pleasure!! Does one wish writers luck? I've been in theatre so long, and one generally doesn't there...
