Trace Fossils

« previous entry | next entry »

(I am in a writing contest. This is the third entry.)

We sit outside the club, the diorama
Of two cold people shivering in late Virginia fall.
The label: “One day he’ll tell his children,
‘I truly tried my best.’”

Coventry—his autograph dents the pages, the posters,
8x10 glossies primly pushed forward by the minder’s hands that milk him,
Her sharpened nails that two months hence will dial his wife
(next door, fool, next door!)
Scored the line that now is broken.

Our behavior is impressed upon the bed—
Trace fossils of the PreDivorcean period.
He’s packing. I’m watching. Clock,
Jeans, the second guitar, he turns to me and sings
Hey little girl is your daddy home...
Nothing is recorded. There is nowhere else on earth
Than in this room, than listening to this man.
Later generations must extrapolate our sins,
Reconstruct the kiss
From the drop of water falling from his hair,
Into the lashes of my left eye, refracting the hallway to the elevator.
When I look back, he still looks out.

His social media is happy. Public tracks
Clean and family-oriented,
He’s never mentioned the wife much anyway—
Fans buy more when they think you’re single,
Fans love more when you leave that out.

I send a note. Vegas. Thinking of you.
Leaving him to draw his own conclusions,
His field notebook tattered, bits of music
Falling from his hands, the absent professor
Unmindful of himself.

He mails back circumspectly. He does not want my pity;
There is nothing more I can do to hurt him.
Our secrets are discredited,
Their case gathering dust in an unvisited corner
Of a lesser museum.

whipchick</lj> is in Vegas, baby.

Thanks - I've been writing for poetry slams a bit lately, but it's tougher when it's not something to read aloud myself!

Something about music makers?, perhaps its in the fingers?
Anyway you nailed the sadness, the hopeless futility. Yes, and the 'trace fossils', word magic.

Yeah - definitely something about musicians :)
Thank you! I got inspired looking up "coprolite" and learning that it's in the same class of fossils as tracks and nests!
